Taking Sista Girl onto the Stage

Have you ever felt bold about doing something, only to find yourself in the middle of it thinking, “What was I thinking?” But then, when you push through, you feel so glad you did—and maybe even a little proud of yourself for rising to the challenge?

That’s exactly how I felt about two months ago when I decided to take on a bold challenge: I accepted an invitation to participate in a local pitching competition.

If you’re not familiar with what that is, think Shark Tank—the show where contestants pitch their business ideas to a panel of investors (aka Sharks). Except this was on a local level, called the Boss Crown Awards. Instead of pitching for equity, contestants presented their businesses to a panel of judges for a chance to win a cash prize.

This year, I’ve been intentional about challenging myself to do new things and step into spaces that push me out of my comfort zone. And let me tell you, this event did just that! It was hosted by an incredible organization called Gathering Friends 2 Give, a women-focused empowerment group that does amazing work for young women and beyond.

As part of the commitment, I had to prepare a pitch—no longer than five minutes! Let me say, I can talk about Sista Girl to anyone, anytime, but squeezing everything into just five minutes? That was a whole other challenge. On top of that, there were training sessions, and one of them involved pitching in front of over 20 mock judges who gave feedback. That was definitely one of those “Sis, what ARE you doing?” moments. (LOL!)

Then came the big night, just two weeks ago. Nine contestants—all beautiful, gifted women—took the stage, looking polished but secretly quaking at the knees. We all got through it, though! I had practiced and prepared, sharing my pitch with anyone who would listen—family, volleyball teammates, even the mailman (okay, maybe not him, but you get the idea).

In the end, I didn’t bring home the win, but I walked away with so much more. Out of a sold-out crowd of over 200 people, so many already knew my brand and were customers. My guest table was overflowing with loving support—family, friends, and my Sista Girl circle cheering me on. Even Sista Girls from out of town showed up to support me. That spoke volumes.

I may not have won in the traditional sense, but I won in another way. I learned so much, made amazing connections, and took Sista Girl Greetings to the stage.

So, Sis, if you’ve been hesitating to try something new, consider this your sign: be bold, step out, and take on that challenge. You never know what doors might open—or how much love and support might show up for you along the way.

With love,

Rhonda
