As we begin another year, let me ask you—how was 2024 for you? Did you step out of your comfort zone? Did you grow in any areas of your life? Did you cross off a few items on that personal “To-Do” list? And...did you send out more Sista Girl cards than last year? (I had to throw that in there!)
For me, I can confidently say yes—I stepped out into some new territory. And once I made that first step, something amazing happened: I just kept going. With each step, I grew a little bolder. I found myself doing things I would have NEVER imagined, like entering a pitch contest (yes, like Shark Tank!) and even going blonde! (I know, right?)
Looking back, I realize these experiences were blessings in disguise, and I’m incredibly grateful for each one.
One of the most powerful moments for me happened back in June when I was invited to be an Artist in Residence. I had the honor of joining a select group of Black women artists—each of us seasoned in life and in our craft. (Fun fact: I was the youngest in the group!) The program, called SOLHOT, stands for Saving Our Lives, Having Our Truth.
For a week, I worked alongside 12 incredible Sista Girls, using our art to celebrate and embrace Black womanhood. By night, we stayed in a beautiful hotel, and by day, we lived and breathed creativity in the studio of the Flint Institute of Art. Imagine creating all day, talking about art late into the night, and sharing sisterly love over catered meals. It was pure bliss—an artist’s dream come true.

Through our art, we spoke our truth: who we are, what we feel, how we think, and how we see the world as Black women creatives. We dug deep, creating from a place of authenticity, and it all culminated in a powerful reception and art exhibit. The event drew the largest opening-day crowd the museum had ever seen!
For me, it was a journey of growth. I took the skills I’ve honed creating greeting cards and transformed them into works of art on canvas and beyond. But it was more than just art—it was about the bond we formed as Sista Girls. We created something sacred, something we didn’t even realize we needed.
Stepping into new territory isn’t always easy, but it’s so worth it. You never know what blessings are waiting for you on the other side—sometimes, blessings you didn’t even realize you needed.
So, Sis, if there’s a part of you that’s been holding back, I encourage you: take that first step. You might be surprised at where it leads.
With love,
Rhonda
